COVENANT’S ACADEMY OF EDUCATION

Questions and Answers—

What kind of classes are available and when?

It is our hope and desire to offer a variety of opportunities, in addition to Sunday School, for furthering discipleship and spiritual formation for all persons at Covenant. Some studies are based on a particular book or books of the Bible while other studies are more thematically arranged—yet rely heavily on our primary source of Scripture as well. Studies are offered on a variety of days and times in an attempt to make opportunities available that compliment the ongoing activities of the church calendar. The Number of class sessions varies. Some classes are short run (6-10 weeks) while others are a larger time commitment of as much as 34 weeks. Beginning class dates vary.

Who will teach these classes?

Our Pastors and trained Lay Leaders and others who have expertise in specific areas will facilitate classes. Course titles and descriptions, teachers’ names appear in this brochure.
May I take more than one class at one time?
You may take any classes that interest you. These classes are intended to enrich your Sunday School learning, not replace it. You may take any level or type of class at any time. Some courses may have a prerequisite. You choose studies that enhance your relationship and deepen your spiritual walk with Christ.

Do we receive credits, certificates or diplomas?

Our goal is to insure a variety of Biblically based studies to minister to all levels of spiritual maturity in our church and community. Using the title “Academy” is to indicate the importance of nurturing our souls with a Biblical/spiritual education. And it is one education that we never graduate from; it is always a continuing education. (Some classes, such as the Disciple’s series, award a certificate and/or pin for completing the 30-34 week courses.)

Sunday Evenings:

Caring for Older Adults

Pat Sullivan, 8 sessions
Sundays beginning September 12, 4:30-5:45 PM
Many of us are finding ourselves in the position of caring for our parents or other older adults without really knowing what to do or how to do it, and being frustrated with everything going on.
These sessions will attempt to address many of these needs. We welcome professionals – a doctor, a lawyer, a social worker, therapists, hospice, grief counselor and others – to work our way through caring for those we love. We will discuss health issues, legal issues, money issues, where to live, how to live, etc.
Please sign up for this course if you are caring for a loved one or if you think you will be in the near future. It will be invaluable.

Disciple 4: Under the Tree of Life

Baron DeKalb, 32 sessions
Sundays beginning September 12, 6:00-8:00 PM
The phrase “under the tree of life” conveys the promise of finding shelter, security, and rest in God’s love. In this study of the Old Testament Writings; the Gospel of John; and the Epistles of John, James, Jude, and Revelation, participants will see the entire process of living toward final rest and reward. A focus on the Psalms leads naturally to an emphasis on worship.
Participants must have completed DISCIPLE 1 before taking this study.

Invitation to John

Linda Guthrie, 11 sessions
Sundays beginning September 12, 5:30-7:00 PM
This short term DISCIPLE Bible Study will meet for 90 minutes for 11 weeks, taking an in-depth look at John’s Gospel. Daily Bible readings are an integral part of this study. Participants are invited to come and meet Jesus and consider anew what it means to be his followers.

Growing Kids God’s Way

Judy Heard, 9 sessions
Sundays beginning September 12, 6:00-7:15 PM
This biblical-based study is great for parents with kids ages birth to 12 years. We will learn how to instill our children with “moral sensibilities,” not create “moral robots.” Our children were born with the innate sense that God is their Maker. As parents, we must lead them towards His purpose for their lives.
This is an 18 week program (9 in the Fall, 9 in the Spring). By Spring Break, our kids should be perfect - or at least ready to take in a restaurant.

Monday

(Women Only) Faithful, Abundant, True: Three Lives Going Deeper Still

Laura Slagh, 7 sessions
Mondays beginning September 13, 6:30-8:30 PM
Join Beth Moore, Kay Arthur, and Priscilla Shirer in a women’s Bible study recorded live at the Orlando Deeper Still Conference. Kay challenges us to faithfulness in difficult days. Priscilla points to the essential of trust in God’s ability, and Beth teaches on how to discern truth from error in these difficult days. 15 to 30 minutes of daily homework.
Monday, continued

1 Corinthians

Tony Smith, 12 sessions
Mondays beginning September 13, 7:00-8:30 PM
This course looks at Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. A look at the culture at the time the letter was written as well as the history of the church at that time will be covered. In addition, where appropriate for continuity, parts of 2 Corinthians will be brought into the study. The assumptions for the study are the Bible is the Holy, inspired Word of God and the issues Paul addressed are still issues at the present time.

(Women Only) Living Beyond Yourself

Kisa Braselton and Evelyn Robertson, 11 sessions
Wednesdays beginning December 1, 9:00-11:30AM
(excluding the weeks of Dec. 22 and 29)
This is by the noted Bible teacher and author Beth Moore and is an in-depth study of the fruit of the Spirit – living proof that the Spirit of God dwells in us. Through this study you’ll come to appreciate the supernatural aspects of the fruit and that you cannot grow, learn, or produce the frit on your own. Beth challenges you to develop the fruit by maintaining an intimate relationship with the spirit of God. As you walk with God, He develops in you the fruit of the Spirit. A Spirit-filled life truly results in living beyond yourself.
